Widescreen TV Guide
Widescreen is referring to the aspect ratio of a television. This is an expression of the height compared to the width of the TV tube. We have for many years been used to TVs with an aspect ratio of 4:3. This was originally adopted partly due to the fact that 4:3 was the original standard for the cinema. But in the cinema, it was soon recognised that a wider picture would more closely resemble the way we actually see. Coupled with the sheer size of a cinema screen, this wide aspect ratio creates a very realistic and involving experience.

In the past TV programme's have been made in an aspect ratio of 4:3 in order to fit in with the available technology. But now TV productions are being filmed in 16:9, recognising the change to Widescreen broadcasting.
Its worth remembering that the 16:9 ratio is the new standard adopted for TV production. The cinema industry will continue to use a number of different ratios, often as much as 21:9. Cinemas are not limited by the shape of a Television tube - the cinema screen can easily be altered by repositioning the curtains.
